The Blooom Award Winners

Recently at the ART FAIR in Cologne Warsteiner held their annual Blooom Awards for the third time, in which (aspiring) artists worldwide can participate. We took a little trip to Cologne and decided to see for ourselves what the fuss was all about!

As a platform for cross disciplinary artists BLOOOM Award offers creative minds from all over the world the chance to experiment with different disciplines within art and reach an audience beyond national borders. For this edition over 800 artist from 29 countries submitted their work.

The vernissage of the ART FAIR was well visited, and the BLOOOM area was very busy when it was time to hand out the award. After an introduction of the jury members and some loving words on the candidates’ works it was time to announce the winners. This year’s lucky first place winner; who did not just win an exhibition at BLOOOM and a year-long mentoring support from a jury member, but also a trip to Miami for Art Basel Miami Beach; was Johanna Flammer from Germany. Her work STOLO on white 4 (pictured above) won all the jury members over because of ‘the unique picture language, the harmonious ornamental composition of colours and different materials in combination with the usage of different techniques’.

Our personal favourite Marbling by Duo AlexP was awarded with the second place. It’s an interactive installation of a slated screen with marbles running down. Once you place a black chip on the screen the marbles are blocked and the hitting of the marble and the chip makes a piano sound. The more chips and the more marbles running into chips, the better the ‘music’ you create!

The third place winner was Mariola Laschet with her work …Zong, Zang, Zing..; an installation consisting of detailed drawings on paper.

Among the other finalists these were two of our favourites:

Altlast 63 by Stefan Bircheneder

A detailed shot of Altlast 63 by Stefan Bircheneder. So beautifully painted!

Miya Ando’s Sentient 8 is not a blurry photo, it is actually hand dyed aluminium. The work is a modern daguerrotype, with which Ando wants to pay homage to the historical photography medium. So pretty!
