1 CITY, 24 HOURS, 12 PHOTOGRAPHERS: MEET DE KRACHT VAN ROTTERDAM

That is De Kracht van Rotterdam (The Power of Rotterdam) in a nutshell. Photographers can still apply for this year’s edition! The organization behind De Kracht wants to create new images of and for the city. When we think of Rotterdam we see the skyscrapers and the hooligans, but there is so much more.

Every year a curator selects 12 photographers. The photographers have 24 hours to capture a specific area of Rotterdam. A jury of experts chooses the best photo, for which the photographer receives a price of 3.500,- euros. The best pictures from this years’ edition will be exhibited in public spaces throughout the city: on an apartment building or a bridge.

THE EXPERIENCE

Ossip van Duivenbode entered the competition last year and he shot the public’s favorite.

Ossip: “De Kracht van Rotterdam was one of the coolest projects I did in 2014. On one hand you get to leave your comfort zone; because of the specific time slots and area you need to work with. On the other hand the project offers a lot of freedom. It was a challenge for me to both work with the rules and show my signature and personal motives in the pictures. Searching for the pictures I felt like being on an expedition in an area of Rotterdam I had known for years.”
