Allen Jones Provocates At The Royal Academy

key-112-810x810

The name Allen Jones might not immediately ring a bell, but we’re certain you have seen some of his work. From the headline hysteria inducing ‘Chair’ or the fiberglass encased body of Kate Moss. His work is on display at the Royal Academy of Arts in London as of November 17. The artist described the viral success of his work as both a blessing and a curse, because it opened up his work to a much wider audience although it restricted him in the type of art he became known for: “I remember reading that the composer Ravel, in the end couldn’t stand Bolero because there was no way he could have a concert without anyone wanting to listen to that. And I can imagine that in the end Matisse must have been brassed off with people asking him about Fauvism.”

The exhibition will feature large sculptures in steel, works on canvas and storyboards he used while laying the groundwork for his creative process. Associated with the pop art movement of the 60s, Jones draws inspiration from consumer culture, advertising and what the exhibition calls ‘the iconography of city life’. Allen Jones RA starts November 17 and will run til January 25. More information here.
