Bas Kosters Bares It All

When you have been invited to a Bas Kosters show, you know you are in for a treat. Despite the other shows, Bas never takes himself (or fashion, for that matter) too seriously and his shows are usually full of fun, energy and colour. This time he chose to open the show as if it were a talk show, with Kosters as the guest of honour and the iconic Margreeth Dolman (one of Paul Haenen’s characters) as the talk show host.

They discussed the inspiration behind this collection, which is titled LOVE FUCK YEAH and, not surprisingly, all about love. Although their ‘performance’ was incredibly funny, there was also a more serious note: when Kosters broke up with his boyfriend  after being together for nine years, he felt an emptiness. Although he felt supported by the love from his family and close friends, he was in a dark place for a short while.

After he came to terms with this loss he decided to dedicate a tattoo to the love that he felt surrounded by, as well as a celebration of a new found self-love, and tattood the word on his chest. Then he felt it was time to translate this into a collection that highlights all the aspects of the phenomenon love.

The show started and it was classic Kosters: an overload of prints and colours; sequins, dolls and other appliques; iconic models from Kosters’ circle of friends, from night butterflies to fifty percent of the duo Petrovsky & Ramone. Prints included innocent heart motives and Kosters’ signature dolls, but also pornographic images in the shapes of hearts. A wink to his now iconic Penis Leggins that took on the blogosphere by storm recently?

Although the garments were vintage Bas, he never ceases to reinvent himself. For LOVE, FUCK YEAH Kosters collaborated with Esther de Groot  to create several interesting masks. The show featured a soundtrack that featured many different love songs, from classic Dutch chanssons to KEI$HA. After the show was finished the models came out once more for the finale, which is never boring with Kosters.

All the models started dancing, even picking up members of the audience (good luck trying to get those stiff front-rowers to join in!!). Church bells started ringing and Bas came out with a model wearing a huge heart-shaped mask, as two others brought in a wedding cake. Yes, Kosters is in love again and ready to tell the world! I love the energy you get off his shows, as well as the very personal touch to it. Happily ever after!
