Oceane, Oscarine and Abdel Nasser by Eric Nehr

Photographer Eric Nehr decided to portray albino children, because of the crazy hunt on albino’s in certain African countries. In countries such as Tanzania, Burundi and Kenya, the albino community there is living in fear, as the bodyparts of an individual suffering from albinism fetch big money on the black market. Witch doctors make potions out of them, which are believed to bring fortune in life, love and business because the locals believe albino’s are half-man, half-god who have special powers. In other countries, such as Panama, albino’s are mythologized by the Kuna-Dule.
Eric Nehr tried to envisage this ambivalent status in his portraits.
