Scarlett Hooft Graafland

Dutch artist Scarlett Hooft Graafland works in sculpture and photography. Hooft Graaflands photos are often taken in extreme landscapes, ranging from salt flats in Bolivia to lava fields in Iceland. She manipulates these environments slightly with ‘soft materials’ such as balls, balloons, fluids or pigments, often with the participation of local inhabitants, with whom she communicates in drawings and sign language.
This intervention pushes the already unique landscapes to another level; unexpected human presence or alienating use of colour creating a poetic and surrealistic image. Some of the images refer rather direcly to iconic surrealist and land art: Magritte is represented in the bowler hats that seem to be hovering over a gletcher and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty is echoed in balloons floating on water.
