NY Fashion Week Special : Vera Wang

Vera Ellen Wang is a Chinese American fashion designer based in New York City and former figure skater. She is known for her wide clientele of couture bridesmaid gowns and wedding gown collections.
Wang was a senior fashion editor for Vogue for sixteen years. In 1985, she left Vogue after being turned down for the editor-in-chief position. In 1990, she opened her own design salon in the Carlyle Hotel in New York that features her trademark bridal gowns. Today the salon continues to showcase collections known for sophisticated drama, feminine detailing and a modern approach to bridal design.

For the S/S 2012 collection Vera Wang presented tiny little vests with detachable peplums in cotton piqué and oversize eyelet. Skirts made from sheer parachute silk that grazed the thighs in the front and trailed weightless in the back. Gowns with diamond-shape cutouts on the chest. Gauzy leggings. All started in white to gradually end in psychedelic colors.
Nicole Phelps from style.com reports: “Wang has been retooling her aesthetic of late, but this collection is as antithetical to the pretty, people-pleasing bridal business that’s her bread and butter as anything she’s ever done. There was a bit too much fairy tale in these clothes, though, to picture them stepping off the runway and into the real world.”
