Reed + Rader Super AR Avatar’s.

Pamela Reed and Matthew Rader met in Pittsburgh in 2002 while attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. “We both had blue hair, we both lived in the same building, and Pamela had a first generation Windows i-Pod so Matthew wanted to be friends with her.” From there on a collaboration started, combining photography with everything that is media related, ranging from illustration and collage to gamedesign and installation. Motivated to aspire nothing but themselves, Reed and Rader are best known for their ‘gif’ animations filled with surrealism and humor.

Do you make photo’s and video’s for your personal fun,
and would you care to share some ?
The only real videos we make outside of our work are exploring new technologies and building things. Some video examples of that are:

where we implemented the Microsoft Kinect with our work “Naptime”. Once when we had a big blizzard here, we hit the snow and made some robot gifs:

What’s going on in Milan ?
In Milan you will see our Beck’s Green Box AR Project. Augmented reality is super exciting to us and we’ve been experimenting with it for a few years now. To be part of this project and have creative control, it really was a blast to create and see it brought to life.

Once in Milan, you’ll need to find our Green Box and then download the Beck’s Key app to your smartphone. Hold your phone up to the green box and our magic world will appear on your phone. You’ll see the lovely Vanusa float on clouds, you can select her character, you’ll see her hit bricks and then ride on a star to victory – this is the multiple worlds that are shown in Super AR_Avatars.

 
Wazzuuup in New York ?
It’s really hot here right now, so we’re inside and staying there. We aren’t big fans of the summer…

Besides that we’re working on pre-production for multiple upcoming projects and trying different new technologies to see where we want to take our work in the next step. Our biggest goal right now is interactivity and making the user a participant, not just a passive user. Lastly, we’re just gardening and playing with our cats. We really like cats and gardening. Where will you be soon ?
Right now we’re working in New York for the rest of the summer. Then we’ll fly down to Disney World and have a week full of happiness with all the characters there. After that, we’ll begin teaching as part of the School of Visual Arts faculty in September. At the same time Matthew will begin his 2nd year of Grad School at NYU ITP.
