Lernert & Sander

from the ‘Lost and Found Collection’. Photo’s: Jouk Oosterhof & Styling: Ferry van der Nat

Artists duo Lernert & Sander have collected found clothing from as many darkrooms they could all over the world. How does the visitor of a sex site manage to lose their pants or shoes, and even more, how do they manage to get back home without all of it is a mystery. Together the clothes represent an interesting collection.

The Lost & Found Collection can be seen at Salon/2 in Amsterdam on the location ‘Magazijn’ (Oudezijdsvoorburgwal 153). The two had the clothes photographed by photographer Jouk Oosterhof. Each photo represents the location of the findings. So sometimes the men wear no more than underwear and a single shoe. A garment on exhibit retrieved from The Eagle in Amsterdam has been labeled with the following:

“Does this garment belong to you?
We found it in the darkroom of
The Eagle in Amsterdam
evidently where you left it behind.
We had it drycleaned and ironed for you,
so now you can start wearing
your fabulous item again! ”

The question doesn’t come to mind easily when seeing the work of Lernert & Sander: is this art ? Cheeky, plausible, credible, the concepts of their creations elevate the mind in a logical fashion. It looks like art, it talks like art, it walks like art… so BLEND came up with some other questions:

Does any of the garments in the Lost and Found Collection belong to you ?
No, we prefer to keep our clothes on in a gay bar.
But we could wear some of the found garments.

Did you loose something yourself in a darkroom ?
No, but we know a friend who lost his computer there. And the Argos — healthcare for eldery (Ed.) — regularly finds dentures.

What is or was the fascination with home appliances ?
We just love generic objects. And from a young age we get so used with home appliances. They’re so homey.

You used it in the video for de Jeugd van Tegenwoordig and the exhibition at Selfridge in London… can you say something about this ?
We love to work with objects and turn them in to the protagonists. Rather then people. And apply these objects for something new. So shoes and sexmachines.

Could we expect a line of home appliances by Lernert & Sander ?
Well we love to do 3D design. But you’re more likely to see furniture design in the near future from us.

What is missing in everybodies household ?
A recipro saw. We used it for our blow job machine. Super handy!

Video for Nowness, supermodel Hannelore Knuts, mua Ferry van der Nat & Vanessa Chan…

Lernert & Sander embrace the urge for cosmetic overkill in their surreal short Natural Beauty. Makeup artist Ferry van der Nat and his assistant Vanessa Chan helped to execute the vision, slathering a host of Ellis Faas products on Belgian beauty Hannelore Knuts, who was recently named the new face of Swiss fashion house Akris. Mission Statement: We wanted to apply 365 layers of makeup in one day to see how much is needed to go from a natural look to an outrageous one.

Elle style award 2011 by Lernert & Sander.

The little plastic thing that makes the connection between the garment and the price tag, was transformed in pure gold for the Dutch ‘Elle style award’. “We designed the golden tag pin as two parts that can easily be clicked together — so it can be worn as jewellery, rather then just sitting on a mantelpiece for the rest of eternity. At the awards ceremony, we installed the tiny 5cmx1cm pin into the label of the Winners clothing, where it belongs.”

graphic artwork for the 50th Sikkens prize in 2010

The logical thing to do for the duo when they were asked to design graphic artwork for Sikkens: “Since the first Sikkens Prize was awarded in 1960 to the architect Gerrit Rietveld we stripped down his red and blue chair and created 10 different chairs. Each chair depicting the recognizable color use of different winners over the last 50 years.”

One more project that is worth mentioning, because it realy is stunning and sexy… the video above is filled with ‘sexmachines’. Indulge yourself on the website of Lernert & Sander for more funny, stunning and mindblowing stuff.
