Basic Instincts

Emerge – showing Anne de Grijff’s Fall/ Winter 2011 collection. Commissioned for the exhibition Basic Instincts by Premsela, from July 1st – July 31st at Villa Elisabeth, Berlin.

Basic Instincts is the project born out of a multidisciplinary concept, made possible by an international team. The Netherlands Institute for Design and Fashion: Premsela, joined forces with Zoo Magazine’s creative directors José Klap and Sandor Lubbe. Curators are Luca Marchetti and Emanuele Quinz — of mosign. Overall design was executed and supervised by Danish multi-talent Henrik Vibskov.

The project could not have been possible without the support of Dutch Design Fashion Architecture (DutchDFA). “A four-year cross-sector programme that promotes the internationalisation of design, fashion and architecture in China, Germany and India and emphasises the combining of forces of Dutch and foreign parties.” So we have a lot coming and perhaps it is something to bare in mind when heading for new directions when you are an artist in the Netherlands.

Fashion is the key to all the disciplines on exhibit. It connects the work of five prominent Dutch fashion designers — Iris van Herpen, Klavers van Engelen, Monique van Heist, Anne de Grijff and Oda Pausma — with product design, architecture and art. Because of the lack of tradition and novelties in media and technology we have the luxury of breeding grounds for an open, creative mentality in The Netherlands and much of northern Europe. It is now time to gain outside perspective, is the voice heard by basic instinct, judging on the coalition for this project.
