May 17 this year, the official opening of museum, MAS, took place, after a weekend of festivities. The MAS building is an architectural art piece housing a museum that aspires to be a bridge between Antwerp and the rest of the world.

The collection of MAS exists of work from elderly museums in Antwerp such as the Ethnographic Museum, National Maritime Museum, Folklore Museum and a part of Museum Vleeshuis. That results in a total of more than 470 thousand art pieces divided in four different themes; dominance, metropolis, world port and life and death.

A very unique thing about the MAS is that you can get a look into the usually hidden places of a museum. Through a meshed wall you can view the wrapped art pieces that are currently not on show and see how they are carefully stored. Besides the candy for your eyes this museum tickles your scent, touch and hearing with workshops, live music by a pianist and the scents of the see. Make sure you swing by when you’re in the neighbourhood.
