Favela Painting Project

This Saturday twenty artists and famous Dutchies will take their pencils and brushes to paint and illustrate on picnic tables. Participating artists are the men of Vage Gasten, Leyp, The Olifants, SNAR, Morrison Schiffmacher, James Worthy, Bas Kosters and Hanna Verboom amongst others. Each artist gets his or her own wooden canvas and a maximum of 24 hours to create an art piece while the public watches their every move. By the end of the summer the tables will be up for auction to benefit the Favela Painting Project.
The Favela Painting Project was established in 2006 by the artists Dre Urhahn en Jeroen Koolhaas. They’re helping young locals to make the streets of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro safer and happier. Together with former gang members and other street kids they make wall paintings, what results in colorful favelas. And while the neighborhood looks nicer, the young locals are doing productive things on the streets.
If you can’t be present at the live painting project, you can admire the tables any other time. The whole summer they’ll be used as the outside setting at Hannekes Boom, a cafe and restaurant down the eastern dock in Amsterdam before the tables go on auction this fall.
The live painting will take place at the picnic side at Hannekes Boom starting from 11 am.
