Japanese photographer Toshio Shibata (1949) is known for the impressive large-format photographs he makes of unpopulated landscapes and civil engineering spots. After starting his careers as a painter, majoring in oil painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he left Japan to continue his education in Ghent, Belgium. Here, he developed his interest in photography and started created images himself. Over the past decades, Shibata has created wide-ranging series at locations all over the world. In 1995, he was commissioned by Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art to photograph the USA, a project that led to his Grand Coulée Dam photographs.
