Last week, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte opened their solo exhibition Rodarte: States of Matter at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The exhibition features fashion and costume design from Rodarte’s Spring 2010, Fall 2010, and Fall 2008 runway collections, as well as original ballet costumes designed by Rodarte for the feature film Black Swan. The items on display – often work that blurs the line between fine art and fashion design – are installed both static and in motion.

Kate and Laura received their bachelor’s degrees in liberal arts from UC Berkeley in 2001 and launched Rodarte in 2005. Since then, they have presented 12 collections and won multiple awards, including the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2009.

Rodarte: States of Matter runs through June 5 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
