One Hundred and Eight

Not many people would know what to do with some fans, 108 plastic garbage bags, MDF, relays, countless screws and a microcontroller. Artist and communication designer Nils Völker (Berlin) however, does. He created his very calming interactive installation One Hundred and Eight with it. Controlled by a microcontroller each of the plastic bags is selectively inflated and deflated in turn by two cooling fans, creating the impression of lively and moving creatures. But as soon a viewer comes close, it instantly reacts by drawing back and tentatively following the movements of the observer. As long as he remains in a certain area in front of the installation it dynamically reacts to the viewers motion. Currently Völker explores new ways of reproducing data and creates machine-drawn light paintings. Check out the rest of his work at his website.
