Gabriel Orozco \ Tate Modern \ 2011

Extraordinary Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco will open a show in London’s Tate Modern coming January 19. The show will feature a broad selection of Orozco’s famous pieces, often made of everyday things that fascinate him. The artist is extremely fond of experimenting with found objects, which he then playfully alters and restyles. One of his key pieces is a classic Citroën DS car, which the artist sliced into thirds and put back together in a stripped down version, exaggerating the vehicle’s streamlined look. In addition to objects and installations, a series of Orozco’s photographs will be on display.

His work permits a rarely allowed interaction between presented artwork and the audience. For instance, in 1998, visitors of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, California could play a four-person game of table tennis on Orozco’s Ping Pond Table. Orozco divides his time between Paris, New York and Mexico City and gathers inspiration from living in different places. The exhibition at Tate Modern runs through April 25.
