Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen explores The Future of Fashion with a new exhibition
The Future of Fashion is Now is an exhibition presented by Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen that celebrates innovation around the world and new fashion perspectives this fall. The exhibition focuses on the growing consciousness that is developing in today’s world of fashion, as upcoming designers continue to be increasingly innovative and mindful in their practice. Our current fashion system will be questioned by curator José Teunissen and the 56 international designers of the exhibition. A few of the problems that will be addressed are: “Do we actually want a new wardrobe every six months or can fashion last longer?”, “Does the fit of a dress have to satisfy the prevailing ideal of beauty or might it be different?” and “What is fashion’s role in the advance of wearable technology?”
The exhibition will explore alternatives for the future of fashion, with innovation in technology, sustainability and new materials at the forefront. But also politics, consumption, the social value of clothing and notions of identity are part of this. Expert meetings, workshops and lectures invite every visitor to help think through a change in the industry. Six designers – Iris van Herpen (Netherlands), Craig Green (UK), D&K (Ricarda Bigolin & Nella Themelios, Australia), Olek (Poland/USA), Digest Design Workshop—Dooling Jiang (China) and Lucia Cuba (Peru)— have been asked to make new garments specifically for the exhbition.
The Future of Fashion is Now is on display in Rotterdam from 11 October until 18 January 2015.
