Artist Daan Roukens transforms the facade of Amsterdam hair salon Tommy’z Toko
It took hair salon Tommy’z Toko eight years to convince the city to let them change the facade of the building, but it finally came through and the result is stunning. Tommy Hagen, the owner of Tommy’z Toko, found a like-minded soul in artist Daan Roukens who he met in Berlin, where they bonded over their love for sculptor/painter/illustrator Sol LeWitt. As Tommy’z Toko is always on the look-out for innovation, Hagen aimed to give new momentum to the neighbourhood with a design by Roukens that would lift the facade of the salon to a higher level. Roukens draws his inspiration from the building, its surroundings and the vibe of the salon. The result is an intriguing geometric pattern with the strength lying in the simplicity of the clean lines. Watch the photos and video of the process below.
Tommy’z Toko has been known for being a unique and creative salon where the hair stylists are encouraged to let their own personality flow. From the first day, Hagen invited artists from the Netherlands and abroad to exhibit in his salon. Thanks to these artistic escapades, the interior of the salon changed a few times over the years – but the exterior always remained the same due to permit regulations. Now, however, the governments licensed the make-over of the facade and Hagen hopes this will inspire others in his neighbourhood to follow his example.
