adidas x Opening Ceremony SS14 11

Who could better explore the stylistic elements of  baseball and taekwondo than adidas and Opening Ceremony? For their fourth collaboration collection, the sportswear label and the multi-faceted global retailer have fused elements from the adidas Originals archive with the free-spirited Opening Ceremony aesthetic.

Their SS14 collection embraces a subdued color palette with an added sense of refinement. Clothes and accessories emphasize shape and texture while interpreting their sports inspiration in tongue-in-cheek ways, including a body-hugging dress boasting front-and-back lacing reminiscent of a baseball glove. This motif is echoed on blouson jackets, miniskirts, and men’s jerseys, combined with sport inspired details such as badges, ribbed hems, oversize branding, and enamel buttons. Other standouts of the baseball range include sumptuous lambskin jerseys and shorts in collegiate shades of red and blue, pinstripe shirts and sweats, leather varsity jackets emblazoned with the Opening Ceremony logo, and skin-tight, maxi dresses composed of jersey-mesh.

As a counterbalance to the American influence on the baseball inspired styles in the collection, adidas Originals and Opening Ceremony reinterpret design elements from Taekwondo uniforms. Jumpsuits and varsity jackets include Taekwondo inspired details such as a quilted belt. A signature dot motif, originating from a pattern found on taekwondo socks, is used on lightweight knits, cropped bustier tops, backpacks, and paneled jacquard miniskirts in tones of dove gray, pink, and light yellow. For women, satin pieces in black and white round out the collection.

The season’s footwear heralds the return and reinterpretation of adidas classics. The Stan Smith returns as a high-top and features the collection’s signature baseball glove stitching and the Gazelle is reinvented as a pull-on shoe in soft suede. More recent additions to the adidas pantheon, like the SML, also find new life when kitted out in embroidered taekwondo badges and metallic details. The Baseball Heel, a patent leather high-heel sandal with cleated tooling, takes its inspiration to heart, while traditional Japanese platform sandals come covered in the bold aforementioned dot pattern.
