Behind the Seams

Last week a new fashion exhibition opened at Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Behind the Seams: An Indiscreet Look at the Mechanics of Fashion focuses on the history of undergarments and in which way this has effected the physical representation of the human body. The exhibition showcases from 14th Century corsetry to contemporary designs from designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Comme Des Garcons Thierry Mugler, Dolce and Gabbana, Vivienne Westwood. Especially under garments for women back in the days were torturous to such an extend that they often didn’t pass the age of 35 – as you can see  in the more elaborate corsets that even look like cages. This immediately made me think of the infamous corset maker Mr. Pearl with his 18 inch corseted waist. One of his students, Gabriel Moginot did quiet an interesting selfportrait shoot for Horst Magazine a few months ago – see below.

Behind the Seams: An Indiscreet Look at the Mechanics of Fashion will be open until 14th of November 2013. Images below Horst Magazine shoot.
