XO Live: Major Lazer
XO Live, the festival formerly known as Extrema Outdoor, has already announced a major part of their line-up for 13th July in Eindhoven and we will highlight a selection of artists. The first band was Justice and now it’s Major Lazer’s turn. XO Live is aimed more at live music and experiences than Extrema Outdoor and believes this to be the future of electronic music festivals. Last year, these following artists kicked off the new concept: David Guetta, LMFAO, Nero, The Bloody Beetroots, Paul Kalkbrenner, 2ManyDJ’s, Goldfish, and Skunk Anansie singer Skin.
Major Lazer is a musical project by L.A.-based DJ/producer Diplo, who collaborated on it with DJ Switch until late 2011. The core of the Major Lazer sound is made up of the combination of modern electronic elements with traditional dancehall rhythms. Their debut album ‘Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do’ was released in 2009 and got raving reviews.
Both critics and the audience valued the project and ingenuity with which Diplo and Switch weaved the different genres together, but Switch got out of the project after a dispute about the way in which Major Lazer should develop musically. This didn’t stop Diplo to produce a number of EPs and the second Major Lazer album ‘Free The Universe’ with singles ‘Get Free’ and ‘Bubble Butt’ (below), which was released in April 2013.
Diplo has previously worked with Beyoncé, M.I.A., and Santigold. His project’s live shows are famous for their energy and audience involvement, so XO Live is glad to invite Major Lazer to their stage on 13th July, next to Justice, Knife Party, Diplo, Alain Clark, Bakermat, Dada Life, Digitalism, and many others. The complete line-up can be viewed here.
Tickets cost €59 and are available through http://www.xofestival.nl
