Five Landscape Modes
Photographer Jason Gowans stumbled upon an issue while shooting landscapes because of the impossibility to represent spaces with multiple perspectives. He would be extremely disappointed each time he went out into the wild and went back into the city only to be confronted with images that were decidedly underwhelming.
To deal with this, Gowans decided to create images from physical objects, by building maquettes using found negatives, his own photos, and images from the Internet. He photographed them to create diverse angles, exposures and shadows. The result is entitled ‘Five Landscape Modes’.
His influences range from Robert Smithson’s ‘Non-Sites’ and Michael Snow’s ‘La Région Centrale’ to western movie sets.
