Louis Vuitton Glamorizes Prostitution
Well, actually it wasn’t really Louis Vuitton but stylist Katie Grand and director James Lima. Grand, who does all the styling for the Louis Vuitton shows – created an exclusive editorial video for her LOVE magazine featuring the autumn/winter 2013 collection by Louis Vuitton. The video depicts several models like Cara Delevingne, Edie Campbell, Georgia May Jagger, Isabeli Fontana, and Lily McMenamy slouching around in dark alleyways of Paris wearing fur-coats and what one would call lingerie. In reference to the LV a/w 2013 collection where ‘underwear turned daywear’ was a concept. In the video the models seemed a bit unsettled, not really knowing what to do, half undressed, dusty eyes, just out of bed-wigs, fur coat on, fur coat off, and so on – you get the picture. Eventually from the streets they find their way onto the catwalk at the Louis Vuitton show, with Marc Jacobs wearing his jammies. Well, Le French do-not-like. Left-wing French paper Liberation printed a letter that was signed by an array of women’s advocacy leaders stating that Vuitton promotes “an extremely shocking representation of women.”
While this might be kind of true, in the bigger picture of it all, thinking of Marc Jacobs (the creative director for Louis Vuitton) acting debut as pimp in the new movie ‘Disconnect’ by Henry Alex Rubin it seems that the LOVE video, the LV collection and Jacobs acting career are all in fact connected. So if anyone is to blame it is Marc Jacobs! But seriously has the fashion industry ever depicted an editorial that reflects a reality? Isn’t it the seduction of the fantasy fashion represents we all love so much? How horrid those fantasies sometimes might be? The thing you want but know you will never be able to attain? Like, you just have to be filthy rich or an escort to buy Louis Vuitton. Why would a short film for a brand be any worse from a movie glamorizing prostitution or violence? It’s fiction for god sake. A t-shirt made out of crocodile for $91.500,- by Hermes I find way more disturbing. The movie is down from the LOVE magazine’s site – but you can watch it on youtube.
Louis Vuitton in response stated that the short fashion film was an editorial by LOVE magazine, insinuating they had nothing to do with it. We all know of course that’s a bunch of bs.
