THE NEXT DAY
A few days ago Victoria & Albert museum announced an upcoming David Bowie exhibition that will open this spring. Shortly after David Bowie released after 10 years the single ‘Where Are We Now?’ of his forthcoming album ‘The Next Day’. Above is the album cover and it’s quite an interesting one. You would probably expect after 10 years something grand or new would be created but instead the cover shows one of David’s most referenced albums ‘Heroes’ with a white square over his face with ‘the next day’ written in it. It is quite an unconventional and radical move but also something that is not an oddity for David Bowie. The designer of the album cover explains more about it here. And he’s right, someone like David Bowie who is such a legacy – it is impossible to eliminate the references from the past. Just say the name David Bowie and you’ll immediately think of an image or song. In that sense he already exists in our heads and probably no newly created album artwork could ever beat that. ‘The Next Day’ will be released on March 12th.
