Candydate

Luis Venegas did it again with his ‘Candydate’, the 5th edition of transversal style magazine Candy. Past covers of the somewhat controversial magazine featured celebrities in drag like James Franco, Tilda Swinton as well as uber androgyn model Andre Pejic. With ‘Candydate’ famous transgender model Connie Fleming in tweed dress and string of pearls, places her hand on the bible and raises her hand as she’s taking the Presidential oath. Yes, she is portraying Michelle Obama in drag.

Although with the usual dose of tongue-in-cheek humor prevalent of Candy magazine, there is in fact a deeper commentary on the still homogenized nature of the presidency itself. In an interview with Luis Venegas for Dazed Digital he explains his motivation for the cover “I remember back in early 2007 when the Democratic Party’s nominees were narrowed down between two “controversial” stereotypes never before seen for presidency: a black man, Barack Obama; and a woman, Hillary Rodham Clinton.” He continues: “At the time, I thought, when will the time come when these archaic walls break down and the White House will be occupied by, for example, a black transsexual woman?”
