Powell’s Mexico City

‘Mexico XXI Part 1 & 2’ is a series by Mexican-based photographer Mark Powell. Like Diane Arbus in her time Powell managed to create a kind of cross-section of Mexican society, featuring all kinds of characters from a gymnast to a nun. Although it is probably safe to believe Mexico City is not as outlandish as Powell makes it look, it would surely be interesting to travel down there some time.

Somehow the images remind me of David Lynch’ movies a lot, all the ingredients are there: a coffee house, men in cowboyhats, a person holding a log, the woods, maids, seemingly disturbed older women, a murder… all we need is some chiaroscuro lighting and strange conversations!
