Tom Sachs x Nike

Written by Margaux Villard

If you are looking for sports clothing in case you would like to reach for the stars, look no further than NikeCraft: a limited edition result of the collaboration between artist Tom Sachs and Nike. The collection reutilizes former NASA materials such as the 2004 Mars Rovers airbags or mainsails for boats.

The design in mind was mainly that of spacesuits but it has now been adapted to life on earth and these pieces turn technology and science into modern aesthetics characterized by lightweight, breathable creations.

Practicality is also comprised in this collection, the ‘Marsfly jacket’ is foldable, the lightweight tote – as its name suggests – is as light as a feather. And what could be thought of as mere detail could come handy in case of a journey to the cosmos notably the periodic table of elements printed on the inside of a jacket or paracord that can be used as a tourniquet.

While Nike was in charge of the design Tom Sachs gathered the materials. The final outcome mirrors his very own work ‘Space Program: Mars’, which was on from May 25 to June 17 at the Park Avenue Armory in New York where the capsule collection was also available. His video ‘Space Camp’, which is part of the trilogy he made for his own exhibition, simulates the training of a crew of astronauts getting ready to face “the brutality of the Mars environment”. As the collection is meant for people willing to stay in good shape, like astronauts about to be propelled into space, this collaboration with the leading brand in sports clothing makes sense and does work perfectly.
