TRACK special: Museum graveyard by Leo Copers

TRACK is not afraid to feature a piece of art in their show which is exhibiting institutional criticism: Leo Copers’ project ‘Museum Graveyard’ in the Citadelpark in Ghent. The piece consists of at least fifty granite gravestones, which have been engraved with the names of famous museums worldwide.

The piece is a double critique: on the way famous graveyards, such as the Père Lachaise in Paris, are turned into museum sites; as well as on the popularising of museums nowadays. Copers believes the 21st century museum has evolved from a silent mausoleum into a themepark for mass participation and art tourism. The piece is spread out over the Citadelpark and is rather impressive, not just because of the rather big amount of gravestones.
