TRACK special: The statue of liberty, fragmented
Another interesting piece at TRACK in Ghent is ‘We Are the People’ by the Vietnamese artist Danh Vo. Vo was born in the year the Vietnam war ended in 1975. Five years later he fled to Copenhagen. His background is reflected in his work, which is concerned with heritage, birth right and citizenship.
‘We Are the People’ is an ongoing project which is exhibited in different places over the world. Since 2011 Vo has had the American Statue of Liberty on a 1:1 scale, in different fragments, made in China. The statue represents hope for a better life for the immigrants that arrived in New York, and the title of the artwork is the first sentence of the constitution.
By creating the massive monuments in fragments in fragile copperr, Vo underlines the vague and insecure meaning of the concepts of freedom and independence.
The piece is exhibited in the Museum van Schone Kunsten in Ghent.
