The Density of Light

Mexican-born artist Gabriel Dawe’s Plexus site-specific installation evoke a colourful rainbow-like presence using thousands of strands of sewing thread. The installations are a reflection on his youth, growing up in Mexico City, with the intensity and colour of the Mexican culture.

Yet, it was also macho society in which embroidery and textiles were reserved exclusively to women and forbidden for a young boy. Therefore Dawe’s work is subversive of notions of masculinity and the role that gender plays in different cultures. At the same time the installations are environments that deal with notions of social constructions and their relation to evolutionary theory and the self-organizing force of nature.

Currently Gallery Lot 10 is presenting “The Density of Light” by Gabriel Dawe which runs through June 9th. This is Dawe’s first exhibition at the gallery and debut solo show in the Benelux. Below are two images of the installation.
