The Eyes of War
Starting tomorrow, De Kunsthal in Rotterdam is exhibiting The Eyes of War by photographer Martin Roemers. The moving series is displaying the aftermath of war featuring portraits of fourty blind casualties of war from The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, England, Russia and Ukraine. By showcasing casualties from both sides of WWII, Roemers hopes to break the stereotypical divide between the ‘good’ and ‘bad’, depending on which side they fought.
The pictures are displayed together with short stirring interviews with the portrayed, in which they tell how they lost their vision, and what their daily life looked like in post-war times.
These personal stories showcase the absurdity of the circumstances under which disaster struck. Many of the blind war victims lost their sight after the war was over, because of munition left behind.
The Eyes of War is on display from May 3 to August 26.
