Although the Prada show was at the same time as the Golden Globes, Miuccia Prada managed to rope star actors such as Gary Oldman, Andrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, brothers Alex and Victor Carril, Tim Dafoe and Jamie Bell to walk the art deco style red carpet. The looks are ‘a parody of male power’, Miuccia acclaimed. This was translated in the strong silhouettes, double breasted power suits, and pinstriped jackets featuring pints, flowers and/or handkerchiefs. The actors played archetypical males such as the dandy and the gangster.
So far the collection seemed to express that dominant male power. However, if one looked closely, nothing was wat it seemed. Clothing that appeared to be made from luxurious fabrics such as mohair or barathea were really made out of cotton, some shoes appeared to be dipped in rubber, and baroque-looking patterns turned out the be rows of American football helmets or feathered Native American headdresses. Topcoats looked like silky bathrobes and what seemed to be formal white-tie neckgear was really a turtleneck tee. It was a very clever joke, as Tim Blanks for Style.com said: “An awful lot of ingenious thought had gone into making a statement about the emptiness of dressing to impress, while, at the same time, producing clothes that will entice men to do exactly that.”
