Daan van Golden – Youth is an Art

De Hallen in Haarlem is hosting three solo shows on Dutch artists whose works is related strongly regarding content: Daan van Golden, Marijn van Kreij and Annesas Appel all show a love for grafic patterns and repetition. In relation to the exhibition the project En/Of (And/Or)  by curator and music publisher Robert Meijer has brought us an L.P. with music from Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and photography by Daan van Golden. It will be released in February. A selection of different And/Or editions can be viewed/heard in De Hallen, and we have the honour to give away this special And/Or edition featuring Ledesma and Van Golden!

About And/Or
Robert Meijer (Beverwijk, 1977) has been working on this project since 2001, combining music and visual arts. For And/Or Meijer asks a musician and an artist to each contribute something that will fit a double album, which will then consist of an L.P. and an artwork, published in a run of 100 issues. As of today, 45 different artworks and records have been released. The And/Or edition of Daan van Golden and Jefru Cantu Ledesma can be purchased for 109 euro (excl. taxes and postage) here.

Daan van Golden, Marijn van Kreij and Annesas Appel in De Hallen
De Hallen in Haarlem wants to underline the importance of Daan van Golden (Rotterdam, 1936) and the way in which his work inspires a younger generation of artists. Van Golden is a typical artists’ artist, whose artistic visions have always found a lot of response under fellow artists. The last couple of years the international appreciation of Van Golden’s work has increased, with a large retrospective of his work on display in London, Geneva and Lisbon. A selection of 50 years of paintings and photographs is on display in De Hallen.Van Golden’s oeuvre is relatively small, yet very versatile. It is typified by an obsessive attention to detail, features references to iconic art works as well as images from pop music and daily life.

Marijn van Kreij (Middelrode, 1978)  also practices repition and revisting existing images as Van Golden does. Returning subjects in his work include grafic patterns on the inside of envelopes and a photo of the band Nirvana. As Daan van Golden he likes to play with images from both high and low culture. His exhibition How to Look Out in De Hallen shows recent as well as older work, and the exhibited objects range from drawings, prints, sculpture and video art.

The work of Annesas Appel (Amsterdam, 1978) is on the edge of fine art and graphic design. Just as Van Kreij and Van Golden repetition plays a big part in her work. An obsessive attention to detail is a common interest of both van Golden and Appel, which results in a rather low production speed. Appel is mapping objects from her daily life, arranging them systematically.

The exhibitions will be on display in De Hallen in Haarlem until the 4th of March.
