Kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen is known for his giant walking Strandbeests, or Beachbeasts. He has been making and improving them for over two decades, and now you can have your own baby Strandbeest at home! The little strandbeests are not made from the yellow PVC tubing like their big ancestors; instead they are printed with a 3D printer as a result of a collaboration with industrial designers vormdok and kantoorvanbentum. Recently a propellor add-on for the 3D printed Strandbeest became available so the little creature can walk autonomously, powered by wind just like Janssen’s full-scale Strandbeests, a video of which can be viewed below.
