Chassis

The Chassis Chair by designer Stefan Diez, in collaboration with Wilkhahn, is a milestone in furniture design, using vehicle body manufacturing technology to construct the frame of the Chassis from one piece of thin metal. This technology combines elastic comfort, durability and strength with the precision and elegance of excellent design.

Textile seat shells and complementing frame colors, developed in collaboration with fashion designer Farah Ebrahimi, give the Chassis its distinctive appeal and a unique style that blends in with every lifestyle – from classic to modern to avant-garde.

The concept of Chassis is more than just a design icon for different scenarios. “This project with Stefan Diez was based on the idea of developing a four legged chair that from a formal and technical standpoint, as well as in its potential to become truly individual, taps into completely new forms of expression”, explains Jochen Hahne, president of Wilkhahn. He underlines that it was all about interiors, where working and living are increasingly overlapping.

Consequently, designer Stefan Diez calls Chassis a “domesticated tool”, an item of furniture that can look different depending on the backdrop. “Just like us, many people today work in creative areas, in networks. In this case, in addition to the responsibilities and tasks concerned, it is all about personalities and the relationships between people and their identification with the working environment”, comments Stefan Diez.

The fundamental concept of the multi-purpose, four-legged chair is pioneering: in that the seat and backrest frame and connecting points for the chair legs are deep drawn from thin sheet metal and then welded by robot. At the same time the chair takes a minimalist approach to material usage, weighing just 5.4 kg. The seat shells are finely grained made of color-matched polypropylene or optionally laminated with different textiles. They are captured in the frames, with frame and shell fusing to become an appealing whole. Jochen Hahne explains: “With Chassis, we wanted to launch a chair whose design and method of manufacture was a template for new working environments where people are gaining importance as individuals. Chassis is the perfect synthesis of uniformity and variety. And because the shell is exchangeable, it can change with the person concerned.”
