Joaquin Phoenix can boast an array of astonishing acting performances, such as emperor Commodus in ‘Gladiator’, Johnny Cash in ‘Walk The Line’ and Theodore from the 2013 feature ‘Her’. Chances are, he will be able to add the character of Doc Sportello, the private eye in ‘Inherent Vice’, to that list soon. The story is an adaptation on the eponymous novel by Thomas Pynchon and is set in the 1970s. One day his ex (played by Katherine Watson) rings the doorbell with a new idea: at that moment she is the lover of the wealthy Mickey Wolfmann. The plan is to kidnap him and hide him in a psychiatric institution.

For the American director Paul Thomas Anderson who adapts the story by Pynchon, this film will without a doubt be a happy reunion with Phoenix – the two worked on ‘The Master’ which received three Oscar nominations. The all-star cast features names as Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Benicio Del Toro. The New York Film Festival will premiere the film on October 4th.
