Dutch conceptual fashion designer Corné Gabriels recently released his butterfly bow tie collection. Together with typographic designer Janno Hahn, who typically uses butterflies in his work, and photographer/video maker Claudia Crobatia and dancer Duarte Fernandes, he created a poetic representation of the butterfly bow tie and the story of a man who finds his own identity. Watch the video below.

Gabriels found inspiration for his butterfly collection in the idea of metamorphosis when he went through a significant change in his own life by meeting his father for the first time. He adopted the idea to the bow tie – a classic accessory – but injecting it with a sense of fun. The collection features digital printed butterfly wings in silk and monochromatic woven ones in cotton.

The designs draw inspiration from the classical dress code, but now come with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. Wearability and timelessness are central in Gabriël’s design language, resulting in unique handcrafted pieces. His bow ties both exude tradition and playful irony by putting a fun twist on an accessory that’s usually considered serious – thanks to joyful colours and designs.

Corné Gabriels released his butterfly bow ties in January 2014 starting at flower shop Ivy in Amsterdam and ending at Sebastian Flowers, Hotel de Russie in Rome and Hotel Savoy in Florence, Italy.
