No rest for Daan Roukens

daan-011

Imagine being an artist. Being restless, looking for inspiration and the finer things in life, all day every day. It happens to Daan Roukens. The young Dutch artist is always obsessively searching for inspiration and has a thing with repetition. Whether it’s a line or color; everything has to be repeated and balanced.

Daan Roukens, visual artist known for his abstract paintings and his colorful blog NO REST FOR THE OBSESSED, is someone who breathes authenticity. Everything is unique. And everything he does is driven by obsession. Painting is his original craft, but has led to cross-overs in fashion, design and even murals.

“The name NO REST FOR THE OBSESSED is a reflection of me. I’m always obsessively searching for new inspiration, but to bring peace in my mind, I need to transform inspiration into ideas. When finishing a new artwork it feels rather cathartic and is my door to exploring new things. So NRFTO is the ‘contradiction’ of what I want to achieve. In my search for rest, I myself am the obsessed.”
– Daan Roukens.

In his artworks, patterns and color combinations that are used in previous work often return. With every new painting you can see he is playing with shades, structures and compositions. Roukens always starts with a pattern on linen, and with each layer he puts, and every color he adds, he bring its vivid expression to a whole new level. But always in a very disciplinary and structured manner.

So, give Roukens a bucket of paint and he sure knows how to challenge the viewer to experience form, color and composition in a minimal manner. He plays with balance while working across multiple mediums, like painting, design and installation.
