Summer is always a time to relax, soak up every single sunray and take on life’s adventures. It’s a time to take a break from the daily routine, get a tan and finish that book you started six months ago. Photographer Katja Kremenic’s work portrays the carefree vibes of summertime through atmospheric snapshots with breathtaking views and beautiful people.

Katja is originally from Croatia, but is now based in Berlin. Although she studied media and communication in Ljubljana, she is originally from the island Cres, just a short ferry ride off of mainland Croatia. Spending half of her life there, the photographer grew up by the water, taking boat trips, swimming, diving and hiking in nature. Her photographic language is strongly influenced by this carefree spirit, as beach and the sea serve as a continual backdrop to her work.

She has said: “You need to be able to read the landscape in order to decipher the real stories and the beauty of things, people and moments, however strange or bizarre. What enchants in photography is the fact that each picture has a trace of reality.”¹

Katja’s approach to photography is not staged, as it is mostly focused on personal documentary projects. Her photography is always intimate and reflects her romantic view on life. It is visually appealing – communicating a sense of freedom intertwined with hints of melancholy. Looking at her imagery awakens a longing for the carefree spirit of summer. She has said: “It’s just one of those common longings… For a life full of endless adventure, spontaneous road trips, unseen sights, wildest sounds, unimaginable colours, sunsets, sunrises, fires and love.”²  That’s also the message she wants to transmit to the viewer – to experience the captured feeling of that moment.

Kremenic mainly shoots analog, using natural lighting and already existing locations. Her work usually portrays stories, fashion and portraits. It’s been published in various online publications, such as Neon Magazine, Vogue Italia and The Photographic Journal, to name a few.
