These Jeans protect your ass and identity with RFID blocking technology

Betabrand, a San Francisco based clothing brand, has presented its latest garment: an innocent pair of jeans that has hidden technology to stop digital pickpockets from stealing your identity and credit card credentials. It’s called the Ready jeans and comes with RFID-blocking pockets since the Federal Trade Commission has recorded over 9 million cases of identity theft – that’s some 19 people per minute. One third of those cases involve financial fraud, but that number is bound to increase as RFID technology makes it easier for the consumer to pay for goods and go without waiting for a signature and receipt.

Research and advisory form Aite Group has estimated that by the end of next year, about 70% of credit cards and 40% of debit cards in the U.S. will have an RFID chip. For thieves it’s a simple as sidling up to a victim while waiting in line at Starbucks or at the movies to scan your pocket and immediately have all the info to make purchases at your expense or even to take over your identity. There even are tablet-sized devices out there that are able to pull card info from up to three feet away. It takes the average identity theft victim an estimated 30 hours and $500 to resolve the crime, according to Transunion.

Betabrand takes these implications seriously and have been dabbling in various use cases for RFID blocking fabric. They were approached by Grey, the ad agency for Norton (best known for its antivirus software), to sew the material inside jean pockets to block the scanning technology. The fabric comes in bright yellow, much like caution tape, but is invisible from the outside. The jeans have been tested at degradation and 20 washes later, the fabric still blocks the scanners.

The company also came up with a women’s blazer that bears the Norton technology and they might release a pair of jeans for women if the crowdfunding for the men’s jeans is a success. Retail prices are $168 for the pants and $198 for the jacket.
