Icelandic Design

Written by Tjitske Storm

When thinking of Iceland, one would not necessarily associate with fashion. However, if we take a closer look at the creative scene there, certainly a few fashion designers are worth mentioning. Whether they work on a national or international level, all of them have a totally different style, vision and method of working. Growing up in Iceland the designers find their inspiration partly in the beautiful nature surrounding them, but they also have to dig deeper; into their own soul, as the island is very secluded. In the end, they just do as they please, and wether you like it or not, they all have their talents.

Mundi Vondi

The boyish rascal Mundi Vondi is well known on the island as the young, talented and fresh designer. Whilst working as a graphic designer Mundi started making his own shirts and sweaters a few years ago, wearing them on special occasions. Soon his talent was discovered by the young and hip party scene and Mundi decided to give it a go and start a collection. Today he has his own shop in the city centre, shows on the Reykjavik fashionshows, and is slowly acquiring an international reputation as well. After facing the challenge of living abroad in Paris for a while, he is happy to be back in Iceland where he can enjoy nature and all his friends and family closeby. For his latest collection Mundi was inspired by the sea, which he translated into extravagantly patterned knitwear and outspoken silhouettes.

Sruli Recht

A designer from complete different order is Sruli Recht. Serious and motivated he is working on his newest collection in his studio in the fishpacking district of Reykjavik. He doesn’t want to look too much at what other fashion designers are doing because it’s distracting him from his own creativity and balance. He strongly believes in the power of his own mind, rather then looking at other designers and making rip-offs of one specific fashion trend. Living in the calm and quiet Iceland he can concentrate on his own projects and of course find relaxation in the nature surroundings. His cabinet of inspiration shows a range of earth sourced materials, from whale teeth, lava and shells to all kinds of stones. For Sruli it’s all about this source and finding the perfect silhouettes through tailoring, molding and draping. He wants to make original clothes for the dark and mysterious anti-hero, the man everybody wants to be or be with in the end.

Kron by KronKron

A name that is already a bit more wellknown in the international fashion industry and still worth mentioning is Kron by KronKron. With their colorful and fun shoes they have gained attention from stores all over the world, counting up to almost 70 retailers today. Since last year their shoe line has been accompanied by an eclectic clothing line. The lovely couple behind the label are Hugrun and Magni, and they design everything together, from the first sketch untill the final product. The collaboration between the two has been natural since the day they have met and they never disagree. Because to two travel a lot, for them Iceland feels like coming home, and it is there they find the peace and quiet to design new pieces and reflect on their own spirit.
