HIS NAME IS SANDER DEKKER, THE PHOTOGRAPHER EXTRAORDINAIRE

Sander Dekker is a name that should be recognized by any Dutch photography enthusiast. If that name does not ring a bell, don’t worry, because you have a chance to turn that wrong into right. Namely, he is opening his solo exhibition titled “My name is Sander Dekker” on October 10th in gallery walls, Amsterdam. Kindly supported by Warsteiner, the exhibition featuring his unmistakably recognizable work will stay open until November 8th .

Based in Amsterdam, Sander Dekker was born in 1980. Before realising his passion for photography, he worked in the fashion industry as an art director and designer for ten years. After growing tired, he chose to buy his first decent camera and leave the fashion scene behind. His career as a photographer started gaining momentum in 2012, when he surprised the audience with a giveaway exhibition, landing him a spot at an art gallery and a commercial agency.

An introvert at heart, Sander has seen extraversion and outgoing individuals as his muse. His photography is heavily influenced by topics of self-confidence and sexuality, being shot from a voyeuristic perspective. His mantra is to observe and capture eccentric characters. The models, chosen based on their unusual features or unpolished nature, are extraordinary and eye-catching in their perfect imperfection. Sander usually shoots in locations he’s never been before and often meets the model for the first time on set. Never having a detailed, pre-planned concept in mind, spontaneity plays a large role in his photographic journey. Dekker only works with an external flash and 33mm wide-angle lens, mimicking the vision of the human eye. His work does not feel staged, it is as authentic as it gets.
