Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam and Pioneer Works Center for Art and Innovation proudly present their newest group exhibition: Under Construction – New Positions in American Photography. They will be showcasing the work of 10 young talented American and Canadian photographers. Even though there are similarities in mindset, methodology and presentation of their remarkable work, each of them will be showing us their individuality and diversity in their artistic practice nonetheless.

Living in the 21st century, digitalization is affecting all of us. Most of our communication is through images think of Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. There are very few people who are not familiar with these social media phenomenons. Because of this and the rather excessive influence of technological possibilities and changing social values, the medium photography will never be the same again.
As FOAM states on their website: “There’s a never-ending stream of many millions of photographic images […] All the featured artists are explicitly engaged in a fundamental reassessment of the value and significance of photography in the early 21st century […]  It’s a reinvention of photography within a totally different societal context, taking account of more than 150 years of photographic history.”

There’s much more to a photograph than just a flat surface. Nowadays a writer uses 300 or more pages to tell us a story, a photographer only needs a 4 x 6 size rectangle to create something otherworldly.
“The photographic image as such and how we perceive it, is one of the most important focuses in their work. It seems like there are no specific rules, nor boundaries. At a certain point one might even ask if it’s still photography we are looking at.”

This exhibition will be open for public display from March 13 – April 26, 2015. For further information and inquiries visit: www.foam.org
