ETHICAL FASHION FOR THE MODERNIST BY BEHNO

The common understanding is that it takes an eccentric creative character to start a clothing label. And if it’s a label standing for ethical fashion, the chances are the founder is a woman on a mission to make the garment industry a better place. Behno, a brand from New York, is refuting both of these misconceptions.

The journey that ultimately lead to behno started in 2012, when its founder Shivam Punjya visited India for his research. After traveling around small villages and seeing the life of locals, the Berkeley graduate was astonished how little the Indian women got paid in relation to the highly skilled work they produce. The Rana Plaza catastrophy in 2013 was the tipping point for Shivam. Thus, behno was born in order to prevent similar outcomes from happening in India, employ women from ethical garmenting factories.

Designed in New York, but produced in India, the brand’s AW 2015 collection is its first ever. Inspired by Le Corbusier’s interpretation of Chandigarh, India’s first truly modern city, the collection is built around clean lines and features a pure aesthetic. Strong colours add a tactile element and visual interest to the predominantly minimalistic collection. The designs exude authenticity and craftsmanship, validating quality garment construction. Throughout the collection abstract elements from Le Corbusier’s artwork can be recognised emblazing garments such as coats, sweaters and shirts.

The head designer Ashley Austin’s appreciation for classic men’s tailoring combined with her love for textile development creates a feminine yet powerful collection. The luxurious fabric selection of the AW 2015 collection comes from all around the world: Italian merino wool, Mongolian cashmere and silk organza, Indian cottons, classic English suiting and even techy Japanese synthetic textiles.

With the rise of behno, the days of dull ethical fashion are in the past. Embracing conscious brands as a norm, not an exception, is the path to a better future for all parties. Go check out behno’s punch of colour and tailored aesthetic here.
