For years the British authorities had tried to catch him while he went around as he proceeded to smear the walls of the city with graffiti. Today, after being exhibited at different galleries and adored by thousands, this artist has become a sensation. For many he is a genius, to others just a clown, but however you want to view him, no one has ever denied him a keen sense of humour. Irreverent and provocative, he uses irony as a weapon whenever attacking institutions, politicians, capitalism while playing scenes and symbols of war. We are talking than none other than the invisible artist: Banksy.

Last weekend BLEND\BUREAUX had the pleasure of dropping by the LionelGallery in Amsterdam to look at some of the most graphic and controversial works of the famous and much celebrated street artist Banksy. Presenting more than 10 original artworks and all limited prints the artist has made, Amsterdam’s LionelGallery organised the most elaborate art sale exhibition of British Street Artist Banksy ever made in the Netherlands. This  Banksy exhibition titled ‘Keep it Real’, which ran from June 20th until July 30th, saw art collectors coming into Amsterdam from all over Europe, China, the US and the Middle-East will to admire the remarkable work of this ‘modern Picasso’.

This wonderful gallery in the heart of the art centre and museum district of Amsterdam on the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 64, has become a true international platform for artists and collectors, already exhibiting works of artists such as Warhol and Miro, and now Banksy. Laying its ground on a wonderful 3 floor studio, the LionelGallery was an all Banksy experience, with artists and visitors of every language passionately discussing the meaning of his works.

Banksy’s politically engaged and satirical Street Art combines humour with graffiti, executed in a distinctive stencilling technique. His works have been featured in cities throughout the world, even in war-torn areas like Gaza.

Some Street Artist are getting really big and can be called the Picasso’s of their time. A few of them have drawn the attention of auction houses and top galleries, a fine example of how the old art world meets the new one.
